How to Prepare for Your Session at Seattle Actor Photos if You Are an Actor

Getting ready for an actor headshot session is an exciting step in your career, and preparing properly can make a significant difference in the outcome of your photos. At Seattle Actor Photos, we want to ensure that your session goes smoothly and that you leave with headshots that truly reflect your talent and personality. Here’s everything you need to know before your session at our studio at Orcas Business Park, located in the Georgetown area of Seattle.

Location and Entry Instructions

Please be aware that the building is secured with a keypad entrance. When you arrive, you will need to enter the code to access the building. If you’re running late or have any trouble finding us, don’t hesitate to contact David at 206-769-5786 for assistance. We’re here to make your experience as smooth as possible.

Select Your Headshot Package in Advance

Before your session, it’s important to choose a headshot package that best suits your needs. Seattle Actor Photos offers a variety of packages, so take some time to review the options on our website or reach out to David if you need assistance. By selecting your package ahead of time, you’ll ensure that you get the most out of your session and avoid any confusion when you arrive.

Wardrobe Considerations: What to Wear

When preparing for your headshot session, one of the most important things to consider is what to wear. We recommend bringing extra wardrobe changes to your session, allowing us a bit of flexibility to select the best option(s). Select tops that flatter your skin tone and complement your eyes: Solid colors tend to work best, as busy patterns can be distracting – Earth tones, jewel tones, and deep colors often photograph well and can enhance your natural features. Avoid clothes with logos or overly bright colors (more on that below) that might take the focus off your face. Yes, there is an exception to the advice about “busy patterns.” You can “calm down” a busy pattern or a graphic tee with a top layer (jacket, etc.), and if you want to make a bold choice about your styling and you have the personality to back that up, then I say, “GO FOR IT!”

Here are a few ideas that might inspire your wardrobe selection. Take the “Colors to Avoid” with a grain of salt. we just don’t want tones that are too light. Some local (Seattle) agents will also sometimes say, “Avoid white, and avoid black,” and while I don’t agree as a rule, it’s always wise to talk to your agent before coming into your headshot session.

Hair & Makeup: Come “Hair & Makeup Ready”

Please note that hair and makeup services are not included in our headshot packages. We recommend arriving at the studio “Hair & Makeup Ready,” as the time spent getting ready on-site is limited. If you feel more comfortable having a professional makeup artist help you prepare, we suggest booking one before your session. We can provide recommendations if needed—just ask!

For hair, ensure it’s styled in a way that makes you feel confident and comfortable. For makeup, keep it natural, focusing on enhancing your features without heavy layers. Headshots should capture the authentic you, so simple and polished is always best. If you are coming in for a session with multiple headshot looks, we recommend that you style your hair in a few different ways during the session to suggest different moods and character ideas. “Bumping up” the makeup for drama/effect might also be something you want to explore for one of your looks if you wear makeup regularly.

Come with a Plan

One of the keys to a successful headshot session is coming with a clear idea of the image you want to project. Think about the type of roles you’re pursuing and how your headshots can reflect that. Whether you’re aiming for dramatic, commercial, or character-driven roles, the right wardrobe, expression, and preparation will help communicate the look and feel you’re after.
