Headshot Prep Tips for Youth and Teen Actors

Getting Prepped

Headshots are a big step for young actors, and a little preparation goes a long way toward making the session relaxed and successful. Here are a few things for both parents and young actors to keep in mind before your shoot with Seattle Actor Photos.

I offer three packages for Youth/Teen actors: 1-Look, 3-Looks, and 5-Looks. A “look” can be thought of as an outfit, so if you go with the 3-Looks Package, please bring at least 3 wardrobe changes. More info on packages here.

What to Wear

Choose clothes that feel comfortable, confident, and age-appropriate. Solid colors tend work best—nothing too busy or distracting. Layers can add variety, but we need to keep the focus on the actor’s face. If you do want to explore a graphic tee or something with a bold pattern, wear it under a top layer. If you’re unsure, bring a few options and we’ll decide together at the studio. Most actors choose the three look package, so make sure you bring at least three different tops so we can create some options. If you are getting a 3/4 shot, make sure one outfit is styled head-to-toe. Explore this gallery for inspiration.

Hair and Makeup

For younger teens, less is more. We want the photos to look natural and true-to-life. A quick touch-up at home is often all that’s needed. Older teens might benefit from a professional makeup artist, which can be arranged if desired. If you don’t wear makeup regularly, you can skip this step, but the styling of your hair is important, so don’t neglect that. And bring your styling products from home if you need them.

Sleep and Hydration

It sounds simple, but a good night’s rest and drinking water the day before the session can make a huge difference. Tired eyes and dry skin show up on camera.

During the Shoot

Parents are welcome to join us in the main space, but I encourage giving your teen some space to connect with me during the session. This helps them relax and bring out their authentic personality, which always makes for stronger headshots. Of course, parents are often helpful as an extra hand for wardrobe styling assistance and hair adjustments, and working together is always part of the plan.

Finding the Studio

Seattle Actor Photos is located in the Georgetown neighborhood at Orcas Business Park:
650 S. Orcas Street, Suite 203, Seattle, WA 98108.

Free parking is available on both sides of the building, and we recommend using the lot just west of the studio near the Georgetown Post Office. If your GPS takes you to the east side, you’ll see the SANCA building—that means you’re close, but on the wrong side for easy access. When you arrive, text me so I can meet you at the front door, or use the pin I provided you in a text message to access the building.

Final Tips

Relax, enjoy the process, and trust that we’ll capture photos that look like your teen at their best. These sessions are about showing personality, confidence, and authenticity—qualities that casting directors love to see.

Below are studio samples to inspire your imagination and guide your wardrobe choices, and there is also a color chart for you to reference.

Take the bottom row with a grain of salt, we just don’t want colors that are too light/pale.
